Thailand: Pai, time to relax and say goodbye to Thailand

Manila, 14º33'53''N 121º1' 55''

Me daba igual!

Tips:
Minivan from Chian Mai, 150 baths, 180 If you want to be picked-up. Takes around 3,5 hours (3 on the way back). Leaves every hour until 17.30h.
Pai countryhuts bungalow, 600baths doble room. Amazing, great garden, nice staff, water, coffee and tea included. Nice breakfast.
The House, nice thai restaurant in the main road. Try Khao Soi, just 70 baths and is delicious.

Max tattoo...if you want a reminder of your trip haha.

Dang thai food, nice cheap thai and falang food. 40 baths.
Mamalon massage, 160 baths for an hour thai massage. Tell them to be easy on you...
Night market, a pleasure for street food lovers.
Visit the canyon, rent a motorbike or take a 100 baths trip to see the sunset.

Thailand: Chiang Mai, I Don't want to leave...

Pai, 19º21’’3’N 98º26’ 39’’E

Going out of the Huay Xai guesthouse I found this Clover Ace, and somehow, I started to be 100% me again in tha days that came. I don’t know if it was a strike of luck for the Ace, that I was going back to Thailand soon, or the people I meet on the way.
After 2 raining days in Luang Namtha (northern Laos), I took a minivan to the border with Thailand. There I met Alberto and Denise, and we were all together to Chiang Rai, and then Chiang Mai (some 6 different forms of transport on that road).
Sunday was a touristic day, temples, masage and weekend market. And on Monday, the real reason I was again in Chiang Mai: the thai massage course.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, as lately I had heard some bad reviews, but it was amazing. It was really nice, I learnt a lot. It is true that it was a lot of info in 5 days, but teachers were always there to ask, and we had a lot of time to practice. Time went by so fast and there were a bunch of nice people there. I met Maria that joined our little group.
The first night we had diner in the street and visited the night market. Then, looking for an open bar we ended up at a hookers bar playing jenga!
The next day, Alberto picked me up at the school and we went to watch the sunset and to the university market ( the next best thing to be able to ride a scooter is to have a driver taking you everywhere, no wait, that is the best thing!!). We had a thai bbq for diner. It seamed as the best idea and we had a great time cooking it but looking at it in retrospect, it wasn’t as tasty as I would have liked it, to put it mildly. Well, I didn’t mention that we were fricking cold after riding down the mountain so everything looked perfect in that moment.

From there, we went to a jazz jam session in the North Gate. So cool.

We returned to the uni market the next day, and I probed my stylist skills and gave Alberto a hipster look. Also, I bought myself a pair of jeans, preparing for the cold of Hong Kong next week.
We picked up Maria and went for diner: the best hamburger ever, after such a long time. And back to the jazz bar. We tried to look for a place afterwards but it was not possible after 2am, everything was closed.

Thursday after class was the day to practice before the exam, so Alberto was our maniki.
On friday, before the exam, we had tai chi in the park, so funny. I did the exam in the morning, passed! (88/100) and Alberto came for lunch to say goodbye. From there I came straight to Pai.

I had such great days this week in Chiang Mai. I was talking to this girl during breakfast and we agreed that is the people you meet along the way what makes the trip nicer, and the way you see and enjoy the places depends in great length on the people you’ve met there.
During this 2 and a half months I’ve been traveling, I met lots of people, in some cases, it has been so sad to say goodbye. Luckyly I’ll get to see some when I got back. Also, this is part of the trip, and more people and nice places are to come!

Tips:

Chiang Mai, Hostel DeeMarc, 250 x female dorm for 4  and 150 mix 8. So close to ITM school. Tony, the owner, the sweetest thing. He lent us a mat to practice the massage in reception, helped me changing the return ticket from Pai and will take me to the airport at 4am cheaper than a taxi.
ITM, thai massage school, 5500baths for a 5 days/30 hours course. There are many levels and different courses.
University market, great fun and wide shopping offer, as well as restaurants.
Sunset at Doi Sutep Hill ( this time I didn’t visit the temple).
Weekend market, in the main street of the old city.
North Gate, great jazz bar just besides the north Gate to the old city.
Burger box simple market, on the other side of the north Gate, delicious burgers starting under 1€. Little food and clothes market there too some days.
Street food on the other side of the north Gate (outsider the old city), Nice food, but there are many rats.

Laos

Luang Namhta, 21º0'10''N 101º24'33''E

Day Market:
Boat life:

I’ve been in Laos the last days. Just a quik stop as I have to be in Chiang Mai on Sunday, so I decided just to visit the north.
I took a night bus from Bangkok to the border and early in the morning I was in Vientiane, were my friend Agus, was waiting for me, exactly a month after we met in Myanmar. He had already warned me that the city wasn’t much worth it, but it was great to spend those 2 days there in his good company, and get to celebrate his birthday.

When we parted, I took a bus to Luang Prabang, it was 12 hours of total hell without AC. No comments.

Luang Prabang is so nice, cool and relaxing atmostphere, perfect to spend some days chilling and visiting around. I also went to yoga there and to help kids with their English. I met great people in my 3 days there!
From Luang Prabang I took the 2 days boat to the Thai border, and from there I came up north to Luang Namtha.

This is the place for trekking, but I’m not in the mood. Weather is not nice either, so perfect for relax, bici ride and blog post!

Maybe I should give Laos another oportunity, by now, it hasn’t win my heart. Too much time on buses and boats...

Tips:

Bus from Bangkok to Nong Khai, around 650 bath. Leaves from Morchit station at 8.30pm and gets to Nong Kai at 6am. Form there take a tuk tuk straight to the border (not to a travel agency), 30baths. You’ll need a photo for the visa. You will then go through the thai border. Then take a bus, 20 baths to the lao side. Visa is 36 US dollars. After that, you can take a tuk tuk to Vientiane for 300 baths, but is better to take the local bus on the other side of the road, for just 6000 kip (less than a dollar). You’ll be in Vientiane  in less than 30 mins.
Sportguesthouse: Not bad, 100000 kip for a double room ensuite (12-13 dollars).
Tuk tuk prices are per person, try not to pay more than 20000 kip for ride, normally you can get them for 10000...Do bargain!!!
Vientiane swimming pool. Great place for a day to relax under the heat. It’s a local swimming pool, not many people during the day and cheap vietnamese restaurant on the premises. 15000 kip (2 euros).

COPE, do visit this center that supports víctims of UXO ( unexploded ordenance).
Le Banneton Bakery, nice for breakfast. Not cheap. You’ll also find it in Luang Prabang.

Bus to Luang Prabang, don’t do what I did and take the bus during the night, at least it’ll be cooler and you might be able to sleep. 150000 kip
Kounsavan Guesthouse (hostel). It has a swimming pool but the hostel is so crowded with people. I share a 4 bed female room for 2 days and then I moved to a better place.
Namsok Guesthose I, 120000 for a double room with bathroom. Great if you’re 2. Just 2 minutes from the main road in the old city centre.
L’Hibiscus Massage and Spa, so cool for a Lao massage. 60000 kip for an hour (you can find that massage for 50000 or even 40000 in other places, but this one has a great vibe).

Cafe Ban Vat Sene, also a nice bakery. Go to yoga to Utopia, 60000 kip for a 1.5h class, or relax in its terrace open till 11pm. Eat buffalo laab at Tamarind....
Visit Big Brother Mouse from 9am to 11.30 or 17 to 19 to help local children and monks with their English. I learnt many things from Si about Hmong tribe life.

Visit the night market and the food stalls: veggies buffet for 15000 kip.

Take a tuk tuk to Tat Kuang Si waterfall, shearing with other 5 you can go for 40000 kip.

Boat trip to Huay Xai, 290000 kip for the 2 days with the tuk tuk drive to the pier. You can also pay 110000 for everyday straight at the pier.
You’ll spend the night in Pak Beng. You can easily find a place to stay for less than 60000 kip. I shared a room with 2 other girls and we paid 25000 each.
Don’t forget to get food supplies and water for the 2 day trip!
In Huay Xai we stay in Daawn Home. It is from an organization that helps village women. You can help by donating, staying at the home or eating in the restaurant. We paid 10 euros for a double room.

From there you can get a tuk tuk to the Friendship Bridge and cross to Thailand to the town of Chiang Kong.
I went up north to Luang Namtha (4 hours on a van, 60000 kips buying at the bus station). I’m staying in a geat guesthouse relaxing after many days traveling. Zuala Guest House. Totally recommend it, one f the nicest guesthouse I have been in. 70000 kips double ensuite. Nicely decorated, and good restaurant.
Bike rent 10000-15000 kip per day.
